(Pounds)

is finally here

Rylie and I have been working on this since we recorded some bits and pieces together back in January. These songs have been constructed from improvised recordings we made over the weekend. You can find us here on Soundcloud. The songs are available for download, but unfortunately when uploaded soundcloud have compressed them slightly. Send us an email/message if you fancy better quality things.

In early January, Rylie and I headed down to my parents farm west of Geelong to record some sounds in the shearing shed. We are currently working on a joint music project together with the recordings we made, but for the moment this is one of my own.

The Chair

This is a cane rocking chair from my childhood. The chair, functionless, hung in our garage, forgotten until my parents separated and argued over its ownership. The photo, found amongst other family photos, stood alone, it had no playing children, no captured moment, just documentation of a chair, floating in it's composition, inviting me to remember it.

I struggle to remember this chair; I remember only the story of the argument over who rightfully owned it. I think it hangs in my grandmothers shed now and it's funny to think of it hanging up for so long.

Looking Glass, Northern Exposure

I never really got into the TV show (I like to think I was too young) BUT I am taking part in this years festival in Northcote. I'm painting a painterly painting on the window of the lovely bookshop, Brown & Bunting (237 High st, Northcote) as well as installing three new paintings inside.
The opening is next Friday the 17th from 6 pm and there will be wine. I'll write some more and add photos once it's done.

Overpainted Photographs

At the start of this year I had an urge to return to the over-painted photographs I'd first started making a couple of years ago. At the time was unclear about what I was trying to do with them and pushed them aside. The three above are the most successful and I wanted to put them up here as they are the staring point for the new work I've been making.

I'm fairly disinterested in the immediate product of painting on these photos, it's been done so much (and much better) before, look her to see Gerhardt Richter's amazing works- http://www.gerhard-richter.com/art/overpainted-photographs/

What I am most interested in is the obliteration of the subject matter the paint offers in these works. It reminds me of the fragmentary and selective nature of memory.

A new-In Progress Painting

This is what I'm working on at the moment, it feels a bit different from other paintings, I'd like to know what people think. Maybe this could be a paint by comments paintings, do they already exist?

It will be called Portrait on a balcony,2011 or Portrait of my former lover on a balcony (before he died, from falling off the balcony),2011
